TransLink® customers can pay for rides on Muni with cash (e-cash), a monthly Fast Pass®, or a 10-ride book.

Please note: Beginning January 2010, there will be two Fast Pass options - the "A" Adult Fast Pass which offers unlimited rides on Muni (except for cable cars) and can also be used to ride BART within San Francisco. The second option is the new "M" Adult Fast Pass, which is a Muni-only Fast Pass that is good for unlimited rides on Muni (except for cable cars) and is not valid for use on BART within San Francisco.

E-cash: E-cash works just like cash and is deducted from your balance on a per-ride basis. TransLink will automatically calculate your transfer period, so there's no need for a paper transfer. E-cash works on all agencies that accept TransLink.

Fast Pass: If you use a Fast Pass to pay for your rides on Muni, you can choose to purchase a Fast Pass for your TransLink card. However, if you have a negative e-cash balance on your card, you cannot enter the BART system even if you have a valid Fast Pass on your card.

You will still get the same unlimited rides on Muni for a flat price without the hassle of waiting in line every month. TransLink offers the same 3-day Fast Pass grace period, so your Fast Pass will be good through the third day of the following month (e.g. your August pass will be good through September 3rd). Please note that TransLink is not accepted as fare payment on cable cars. If you currently use a Fast Pass to ride cable cars we recommend that you continue to purchase the paper Fast Pass until further notice.

10-ride book: If you currently use tokens or single-ride ticket booklets, you will now purchase the 10-ride book.

Transfers: When using TransLink, you do not need to take a paper transfer when transferring to another Muni vehicle or another transit agency that accepts TransLink.

TransLink will automatically calculate the 90-minute transfer period on Muni. You must tag your card each time you transfer so that the card reader can confirm the transfer period is still in effect. Golden Gate Ferry customers will receive one free transfer to Muni within 2 hours of tagging their card at the Ferry Terminal, and a second free transfer that is good for 24 hours following the first Muni transfer. When you transfer from BART to Muni within an hour using your Adult TransLink® card, you will qualify for two $0.25 discounts on Muni buses, light rail vehicles and historic streetcars within a 24-hour period following your initial transfer to Muni. Again, you must tag your card to the card reader in order for the system to calculate your discounted fare.
